Théophile Gautier was born in 1811 in Tarbes (small town in the Pyrenees) and died in Paris in 1872. His father, Pierre Gautier, was an official in the State Mines Authority. His mother was Antoinette-Adelaïde Concarde. In 1814 the family moved to Paris. While still at school, he met Gerard de Nerval, with whom he became friend for life and through whom he became acquainted with Victor Hugo. His work for La Presse allows him to travel to Spain, Italy, Russia, Egypt and Algeria. The resulting travelogues achieve high circulation. Activities for other newspapers follow. The most famous work by Théophile Gautier is Capitaine Fracasse.
