Also in French we have the possibility to use the declarative clause and pronounce it as a question by raising the voice at the end of the clause. In written language this would not be an option, even though the question mark could give the necessary information. However, we would not do this in English, either.

Il a lu ta lettre?
Did he read your letter? (word-by-word: He has read your letter?)
