5.1.3 Indirect object / Dative

The indirect object is also called Dative. The question for the indirect object is to whom an the the indirect object is market in english with the preposition to. (I give it to him.)
In French the indirect object is marked by the preposition à.

This a word to word translation. The result is not very english, but very french.

example
He gives the money to the girl. Whom does he give the money? To the girl.
Il donne de l' argent à la fille. À qui donne-t-il de l' argent? À la fille.

We give to Michael of the money. Whom do give we money? To Michael.
Nous donnons à Michael de l'argent. À qui donnons nous de l'argent ? À Michael.

He gives the book to the child. Whom does give he the book? To the child
Il donne le livre à l' enfant. À qui donne-t-il le livre? À l' enfant.

He gives the book to the children. Whom gives he the book? To the children.
Il donne le livre aux enfants. À donne-t-il le livre? Aux enfants.

He gives the book to the boy. Whom does he give the book? To the boy.
Il donne le livre au garçon. À qui donne-t-il le livre? Au garçon.
