14.9 Substantivation of comparatives and superlatives

In English all comparatives and superlatives can be used as nouns.

The better of the two will win.
The best will win.
The fastest arrives sooner.
The fastest arrived after three minutes.

This works the same in French, however, due to the form of the French comparative there is no differenciation between the comparative and the superlative in substantivated form.

substantivated comparative Lequel des deux est-ce que tu as acheté? Le meilleur marché.
Which one of the two did you buy? The cheaper (one).
substantivated superlative C' était le meilleur marché de tous.
It was the cheapest of all.
