Sur is quite easy, it simply means on.

Example

The book is on the table.

Analogue to dessous (for sous) there is an adverb for sur, which is dessus. Which again means, that
sur = on, dessus = up.

Example
Elle va dessus.
  She goes up.

Further, there are similar combination of the adverb:

là-dessus = on it
ci-dessus = up here

Example
Il a craché là-dessus.
  He spit on it.
Ci-dessus vous voyez les anges qui s' ennuient.
Up here you see the angles being bored.

Again analogue to dessous de / au-dessous de there is the combination of
preposition + dessus = en dessus de / au-dessus de.

en-dessus de = au-dessus de = above

Example
En-dessus de la ville, dans une position dominante, on voit l' église.
Au-dessus de la ville, dans une position dominante, on voit l' église.
Above the city, in a dominant position, one can see the church.
