The preposition au lieu de can be used with an object as well as with an infinitive.

au lieu de = instead of
	Au lieu d' un gâteau, elle a fait un pain.
	Instead of a cake, she made a bread.
	Au lieu de travailler, il dort.
	Instead of working, he sleeps.
